Earths biosphere is endowed with extremely diverse kind of environment which provides all basic needs to the mankind. Any component of the natural environment that can be utilized by man for his welfare is considered as a natural resource. Natural resources are therefore used for supporting life and human requirements. For example, wood is used for making furniture;yarn obtained from cotton is used for making cloth. Some resources are directly available for use like air, forests, rivers, edible plants, etc. However, most of the resources such as oil, ground water and metals are not directly available. So, an appropriate technology is required to transform them into more valuable products.
Resources are the materials present in the environment which help in fulfilling the needs of the human being and the objective of the society as well. (Encyclopedia of Social Science)
